Traffic is back to normal this morning after authorities cleared multiple wrecks that caused headaches for commuters on the Don Holt Bridge and Interstate 26.
Authorities reported as many as seven cars and a motorcycle were involved in at least two wrecks in the westbound lanes of the Don Holt about 8 a.m. Traffic was backed up past Clements Ferry Road for more than an hour.
No one was seriously injured in a collision involving five cars and a motorcycle, according to Charles Francis, public information officer for the Charleston police department. Francis said the wreck was the result of a chain-reaction.
A second wreck involving two more cars was also reported near the bridge.
An earlier wreck in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 near Eagle Drive also contributed to the backups, which at one point stretched eight miles to the College Park Road Exit.
Motorists on U.S. 78 reported long delays just to get onto the interstate. A three-car wreck on I-26 at U.S. 78 was reported later about 9 a.m.
