SPARTANBURG — A Spartanburg woman has been killed after she was hit by a train at a railroad crossing.
The Spartanburg County coroner’s office says 51-year-old Lavenia Pitts Gentry was hit shortly after 8:30 p.m. Saturday and died at the scene.
A driver told deputies he was stopped at the crossing because the signal arms were down. The witness said two women tried to run across the tracks in front of the train and Gentry was hit.
A sheriff’s report states that the other woman said they were on the way to a store to buy cigarettes.
No charges are expected.
