Walterboro Mayor Bill Young has scheduled a news conference at 2:30 p.m. "to reassure the Walterboro community that law enforcement is aggressively investigating the violent crimes that have affected their areas," according to a news release from the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

Three people, including 20-month-old Shaniyah Burden, were killed about 10 p.m. Monday during a drive-by shooting at a home at the corner of Gerideau and McDaniel streets. Also killed were her relatives Charles "Bubba Dog" Kittrell, 45, and 21-year-old Christopher Powell.

Two more people were shot Wednesday night just blocks from the site of the slayings. Both men were transported to Medical University Hospital. Gunfire also was reported near the Cleveland Street home where relatives of Monday night's victims have been staying.

SLED and Walterboro police are investigating Monday's night's shooting, while Wednesday's gunplay occurred in the jurisdiction of the Colleton County Sheriff's Office.

Mayor Young is expected to address the increased patrols by local, state and federal agencies. A SLED representative is also scheduled to participate.

The news conference is at City Hall, 242 Hampton St.
