Walterboro man charged in Colleton County shooting

Ernest Sanders

WALTERBORO --- Bail was set at $210,000 Monday for a man accused of shooting a man in a fight Saturday night on Hendersonville Highway.

Ernest Mondell Sanders, 35, of Neland Court in Walterboro is charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He is being held at the Colleton County Detention Center, County Sheriff George A. Malone said.

Malone said deputies were dispatched about 8:35 p.m. to 14594 Hendersonville Highway, concerning a fight in progress. Deputies were told that a man who’d been shot was at 1011 Low Country Highway, where Russell Manigo was found in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in the back yard.

Manigo reported he’d been shot in his right arm and also hit in the back of the head with a board. He was taken by fire/rescue personnel to Colleton County Medical Center for treatment, the sheriff said.

The Criminal Investigations unit was notified and responded to the scene.

Deputies located Sanders near the original crime scene and took him into custody, Malone said.

Malone said Sanders and Manigo gave conflicting stories about the incident, which is under investigation, but it appears they knew each other.
