ROANOKE, Va. — Authorities in Carroll County have arrested three people in connection with the shooting and wounding a South Carolina deputy.

WDBJ-TV reports ( ) that deputies tried to stop a vehicle Monday morning, but the suspects led authorities on a 10-minute chase until the vehicle crashed.

Virginia State police say there was shooting at the crash site and one suspect was injured.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Brad James was shot near his right eye and in the hip trying to pull a driver over late Sunday night. The driver didn’t stop, resulting in a chase that ended when the suspect crashed his car. Investigators say James was shot during a struggle with the suspect.

Sheriff Chuck Wright says James has undergone surgery and is expected to recover.
