HILTON HEAD ISLAND — A Salt Lake City company has purchased much of the Daufuskie (Daw-FUSS-Kee) Island Resort in South Carolina.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports The Pelorus Group bought most of the property from a private investment group, AFG, that had reclaimed the property from bankruptcy.

AFG’s chief operating officer, Don MacKenzie, said the deal closed May 10. The resort borrowed money from AFG before filing for bankruptcy two years ago.

The purchase price was not revealed.

The sale includes the Melrose golf course as well as the resort’s inn, tennis, conference and equestrian centers. It also includes 16 acres of undeveloped land.

An attorney for Pelorus, Rob Reynard, said the company specializes in acquiring and reviving distressed properties.

Daufuskie is reachable only by boat and is near Hilton Head Island.
