The two-time defending NCAA champion South Carolina baseball team signed the nation's top recruiting class, according to Collegiate Baseball.

The Gamecocks signed 16 high school prospects and had five junior college transfers in this class, including seven players who were drafted by Major League Baseball teams.

Wando shortstop Connor Bright, The Post and Courier's Player of the Year, is one of 10 players USC signed from the state. Outfielders Tanner English (Murrells Inlet) and Shon Carson (Lake City) were labeled as two of the best available athletes in the 2011 MLB draft.

College soccer

Stephanie Allen's 63rd- minute goal lifted Presbyterian to a 1-0 women's win at The Citadel (2-5-1).

--The College of Charleston's Andy Craven, who had two goals and an assist in a 3-2 win at Denver, was named Southern Conference player of the week.

College volleyball

The College of Charleston (8-7) swept to a 3-0 home win over Charleston Southern (3-12). Sloane White had 11 kills for the Cougars, who won, 25-20, 25-16, 25-16.

--The Citadel (6-5) posted a 3-2 win over Francis Marion. The Bulldogs, led by Koana Mercer with 17 kills, won, 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-12.


Defensive back Marty Williams of Fox Creek committed to Clemson on Monday night, his coach, Russ Schneider, said. Williams plays quarterback and safety at the school in North Augusta. Williams' first offer was from the Tigers. He's the 18th commitment for Clemson's 2012 class, the fifth for the secondary. He is the 11th player from the state committed to the Tigers for 2012.


Judy Collins of Rivertowne and Peggy Brinson of Coosaw Creek shot 85s for field low gross and Judy Whaley of Coosaw Creek had a 67 for field low net in the CALGA tournament Tuesday at Shadowmoss.
