Ashley Hall School on Rutledge Avenue in downtown Charleston was put on lockdown for about 20 minutes this afternoon while police pursued two people believed to have stolen a bicycle from the College of Charleston area.
Cynthia Hay Johnson, the assistant head of the school, said police asked that the school be locked down after a suspect reportedly ran through the campus. “One happened to jump the fence and ran through campus and kept going,” she said.
There was never any danger to students, faculty or administrators, she said. An alert was also sent to parents about the situation and when the lockdown was lifted.
One of the suspects, a 16-year-old juvenile, was arrested and charged with larceny and resisting arrest. The second suspect was not immediately located and a K-9 search was launched. Two police officers were stationed at the school as students were released for the day.
