The Charleston District of the AARP TaxAide free tax service is holding its first full tax season at the Charleston County Main Library, 68 Calhoun St. in downtown Charleston.
Assistance will be offered 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Mondays through April 16.
AARP TaxAide offers free tax preparation for all low- and medium-income residents. Clients should arrive at least one hour before closing time.
Clients are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. AARP will have a minimum of five tax counselors available every Monday to ensure that all clients are accommodated. The service is free to the general public.
Residents should bring with them a photo ID, Social Security card, all papers necessary for return preparation and a copy of last year's return if possible.
Returns are prepared and filed electronically, and clients retain a paper copy of the return for their records. A direct deposit feature is offered so that refunds can be returned to the client in about one week.
All tax counselors have been certified by the IRS at the Advanced Level and are capable of handling all but the most complicated returns. All returns are quality reviewed by a second counselor to insure accuracy. Questions regarding the tax site should be directed to the AARP district director at 723-6218 or email@example.com.
