A 19-year-old James Island man suspected of shooting his brother on Jan. 26 was arrested today by U.S. Marshals in Florida, authorities said.
Darnell Lafayette of Sol Legare Road was apprehended in Jacksonville after investigators learned he had fled from Charleston to Florida, according to a news release from the Marshals Service.
Lafayette is accused of shooting his brother, Anthony Lafayette, in the leg during a domestic dispute at their home at 2003 Sol Legare Road about 6:15 p.m. on Jan. 26. The victim was taken by Charleston County EMS to a hospital, where he was treated and released, sheriff’s Maj. John Clark said. The Sheriff’s Office issued arrest warrants charging Darnell Lafayette with first-degree assault and battery.
“Mr. Lafayette thought that by leaving South Carolina, he could escape the charges he will return to face,” said Kelvin Washington, U.S. Marshal for South Carolina. “It is the diligent efforts of investigators in Florida and South Carolina that brought this fugitive to justice. Cooperation amongst law enforcement is always a key element in successes like this.”
