SUMMERVILLE — A 23-year-old woman died and two more people were injured in a head-on collision this morning on S.C. Highway 61.

The deceased woman was identified as Whitney Simmons, Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet said. Simmons was on her way to work in West Ashley.

The three-car wreck happened about 7:45 a.m. near Middleton Place, closing the road for several hours. The roadway was reopened by 12:30 p.m.

Nisbet said a GMC Envoy heading toward Summerville on S.C. Highway 61 apparently ran off the road and over-corrected, striking a Honda on the driver's side.

Simmons was killed instantly, Nisbet said.

The Envoy was then hit in the side by a Jeep that was behind the Honda, Nisbet said.

The driver of the Envoy was flown by helicopter to the Medical University Hospital. The driver of the Jeep was taken by ambulance to Summerville Medical Center.

None of the names of the others involved in the wreck have been released yet.

The S.C. Highway Patrol's Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash, S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers said.
