Summerville police arrest suspect in recent bank robbery; bail denied

Tyrel Collins

SUMMERVILLE — Police here have arrested a man sought in a robbery of a bank earlier this month.

Tyrel Collins, 21, is charged with the June 17 holdup at the Wachovia bank at 805 Bacons Bridge, Capt. Jon Rogers wrote in an e-mail sent Thursday afternoon. A judge denied bail on charges of entering a financial institution with intent to steal, kidnapping, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and unlawful possession of a firearm, Rogers wrote.

Three armed men wearing black clothing entered the bank around 9:25 a.m. and demanded cash from multiple tellers, but police got some of the money back after a dye pack exploded inside the would-be getaway car while it was still in the parking lot. The Mitsubishi was stolen from a West Ashley residence Sunday morning, police said. Authorities have not released information about other suspects.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call police at 851-4100.
