A student at Sangaree Middle School in Berkeley County was found to have brought a knife to school today.
A school district spokeswoman said a student reported that another student had a knife in his possession. The principal then notified the student's parents and law enforcement. The student was subsequently charged with possession of a weapon, said Kathie Sizemore, public information officer for the Berkeley County School District. Sizemore said the district has a zero tolerance policy for weapons on school property, "and appropriate disciplinary action has been taken."
She declined to identify the action, citing the child's minor age. Sanctions in cases of criminal conduct listed on the district's web page include withdrawal of privileges, out-of-school suspension, and expulsion, among others.
