Student accused of starting fire at West Ashley High School identified

Malcolm Singleton

One person was arrested this morning after a small fire was started in a classroom at West Ashley High School.

Malcolm Gerrell Singleton, 18, of Corral Drive, is charged with third-degree arson, Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said. Singleton is accused of setting fire to a couple of empty boxes in the classroom, Francis said. There were several witnesses, students who were also in the classroom at the time the fire was set, Francis said. Singleton was taken to the Cannon Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

Charleston firefighters responded to the school at 8:54 a.m. but school officials had already extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived, Fire Department spokesman Mark Ruppel said. He said no injuries or damage were reported.
