NORTH CHARLESTON — The state Transportation Department is asking the public about how best to ease congestion on one of the state’s busiest interstates - I-526 between North Charleston and the West Ashley area of Charleston.

The department is holding a public meeting on Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at North Charleston City Hall to discuss options.

The interstate is expected to become even more crowded as operations at the new Boeing plant gear up and the State Ports Authority’s new terminal at the old Charleston Naval Base comes on line.

Among options being considered are shifting traffic to other modes of travel, low-cost traffic improvements and widening the interstate.
