Sapakoff: Capital One Bowl prediction - Gamecocks in an "upset" - and MVP pick

South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw

ORLANDO, Fla. - There is no Florida sunshine at the Capital One Bowl, where the Big Ten team is favored over the SEC team.

Which means this game is a Universal Studios thrill ride.

Slipping, sliding and rationalizing ...

The case for Wisconsin: Running backs Melvin Gordon (122.2 yards per game) and James White (111.4) romp against a defense that has struggled against the run at times, and enjoy doing the "U Dub Step" touchdown celebration dance.

The case for South Carolina: Kelcy Quarles, Jadeveon Clowney and pals do enough up front to allow linebackers to make tackles, while Connor Shaw keeps the Wisconsin defense gasping - and South Carolina one step ahead in what might be a higher scoring game than expected.

Matchup to watch: Gamecock receivers vs. Wisconsin's penchant for press coverage. In theory, it should work well against smallish receivers but Bruce Ellington is stronger and tougher than his 5-9, 196-pound frame indicates.

Weather factor: Of course, the quarterbacks won't like a slippery football. But how snappers, holders and kickers deal with the projected wet conditions might determine the outcome. Gamecocks freshman kicker Elliott Fry has handled a lot of adversity so far this season.

The pick: South Carolina 34, Wisconsin 31

MVP: Connor Shaw, determined to finish strong after not finishing the Outback Bowl win over Michigan last year.
