ANDERSON — Officials are blaming a squirrel for a power outage at an Anderson hospital for 90 minutes.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reported reported that backup batteries at AnMed Health Medical Center functioned properly when the hospital lost power shortly before 7 a.m. Monday.

A hospital spokeswoman says it took about 20 minutes for four small generators to provide power to the emergency department, coronary care unit, boiler room and education building.

There were no problems for the patients.

Duke Energy spokeswoman Betsey Conway says a squirrel at a substation caused the outage. Sixteen other customers also were affected.

Conway says the squirrel did not survive.
