Yankees Alex Rodriguez to play for RiverDogs Tuesday night

Alex Rodriguez will play Tuesday night for the Charleston RiverDogs

Alex Rodriguez, the controversial Yankees star who last week irked New York management with tweets about his rehabilitation status, will play at least three innings Tuesday night for the Charleston RiverDogs against the Rome Braves at Riley Park.

It’s possible, a RiverDogs spokesperson told the Post and Courier, that Rodriguez will also play Wednesday night for the South Atlantic League team.

Game time is 7 p.m. both nights.

“A-Rod” has been out all season while recovering from hip surgery in January, but has been working out at the Yankees minor league complex in Tampa preparing for a rehab start most assumed would come with the high-level Class A Tampa Yankees.

“Awesome,” Rodriguez said Monday at the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa. “I’m really excited.”

Tickets late Monday were moving fast for Tuesday night’s game. Wednesday night already was a near-sellout; the RiverDogs are out of town Thursday night and planned their annual Fourth of July fireworks show Wednesday night. Fireworks also are scheduled for Tuesday night.

“We’re anxious to see how A-Rod is progressing,” RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols said. “This should be fun.”

Other big leaguers have had rehab stints for the low-Class A RiverDogs, including former College of Charleston player Brett Gardner last season. But Rodriguez would be by far the biggest established star to wear a Charleston uniform.

Rodriguez has hit 647 home runs over 19 major league seasons.

But the 37-year-old is among the names tied to a Major League Baseball investigation of Anthony Bosch and his Biogenesis lab, which has been accused of giving performance-enhancing drugs to players.

Rodriguez tweeted last week that he was cleared to play in rehab games, and Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman immediately fired back.

“You know what, when the Yankees want to announce something, (we will),” Cashman told ESPN New York. “Alex should just shut the (bleep) up. That’s it. I’m going to call Alex now.”

Both parties later indicated things had been patched up, at least temporarily.
