West Ashley scored early and often Friday night as the Wildcats rolled to a 44-0 victory over visiting Lake Marion.

The Wildcats' offense dominated on the ground with 227 yards rushing. And the defense was just as impressive, holding the Gators to minus-2 yards in the first half.

West Ashley coach Bobby Marion was pleased with his team's performance after watching the Wildcats struggle in their season opener last week, a 13-10 victory over Bishop England.

"Last week may have been my worst ever as an offensive coordinator," he said. "I challenged the offense this week and Jared Mole got us jump-started on the opening kickoff."

Mole, a junior, got West Ashley going early with a 67-yard return on the opening kickoff. The Wildcats scored three plays later on quarterback Thomas Woodhead's 6-yard run.

After a Gators punt, tailback Jamie Rivers scored his first of two TDs -- a 6-yard run -- to give West Ashley a 14-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.

Matt Stonaker kicked a 35-yard field goal and tight end Donovan Burns added a pair of TDs -- a 10-yard run and a 7-yard pass from Woodhead -- to make it a 30-0 game at the half.

Woodhead completed 4 of 5 passes for 29 yards and one TD.

"Thomas is maturing and getting better," Marion said of his quarterback. "We told the team your biggest improvement usually occurs between your first and second game."

West Ashley completed the scoring with Rivers' second TD, a 2-yard run in the third quarter, and Mole's 12-yard run with 4:58 left in the game.

The Wildcats held Lake Marion to 73 yards total offense, with 48 of that coming on the Gators' last drive of the game.

Mole finished with 72 yards on 14 carries and Rivers added 51 yards on 10 rushes. Woodhead completed 4 of 5 passes for 29 yards and one TD.

West Ashley improved to 2-0. Lake Marion dropped to 1-2.
