West Ashley pitcher and shortstop Jonathan Sabo was named to the Class AAAA all-state team by the S.C. Baseball Coaches Association, and Wildcats coach Mitch Miggenburg was named the AAAA coach of the year.
Sabo led West Ashley to a region title and to the Lower State finals, where the Wildcats lost to top-ranked Sumter.
The Post and Courier's All-Lowcountry player of the year in 2013, Sabo hit .400 in 29 games this season, driving in 19 runs. As a pitcher, he was 9-1 with an 0.90 earned-run average.
Miggenburg, a former College of Charleston player, led the Wildcats to a 24-7 record, a Region 7-AAAA title and a district tournament championship.
James Island pitcher Daniel Wilcutt made the Class AAA all-state team, along with Mat Clark of Hilton Head and Kevin Woodall Jr. of Georgetown. The Lowcountry had no All State players in Class AA or Class A.
St. John's Kayla Wright claims state title
Burke standout Raven Saunders was not the only Lowcountry athlete to claim a state title in the shot put last week at the state track and field championships.
St. John's Kayla Wright, a junior, won the Class A shotput championship with a throw of 33 feet, 3 1/2 inches.
As a team, the St. John's girls finished ninth in Class A.
All-region soccer teams
Wando's Shilo Tisdale has been named boys soccer coach of the year in Region 7-AAAA, with West Ashley's Drew McNeely the girls' coach of the year.

All-region 7-AAAA girls: Logan Nelson, Allie Winglosky, Hannah Betford and Ellen Hayes of Wando; Carly Meara, Nikki Koeing and Heather Blaszak of Stratford; Alexis Friedrichs, Alley Gerthoffer and Remi Olalere of West Ashley; Breanna Crenshaw, Maddison Van Hoose and Savanna Lewis of Goose Creek; Ashley Dangerfield, Shelby Kimbro and Maddie Murray of Cane Bay.
Pinewood Prep's Schwartz signs
Pinewood Prep senior Evan Schwartz, a 6-4 guard, recently signed to play basketball at Erskine College, a Division II school in Due West.
