A six-run lead wasn't enough for the College of Charleston as Western Carolina scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings and went on to capture a 7-6 win in 12 innings over the Cougars in the Southern Conference baseball tournament at Riley Park.

The game started at 9:35 p.m. Thursday and did not end until 2 a.m. Friday.

Western Carolina scored two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth. But the ninth was the real heartbreaker.

Heath Hembree came on in relief of David Peterson and hit the first two batters he faced. The Catamounts got a single to load the bases, then Tyler White's single scored a pair of runs to send the game into extra innings.

The Mountaineers loaded the bases in each of the extra innings and finally pushed across the winning run when Cameron Dullnig hit a grounder to first. Greg Blake tried to make the force at the plate, but his throw went into the dirt.

Cole Rakar had two hits and two RBIs for the Cougars, while Rob Kral went 3 for 7. Reliever Dre Watts was charged with the loss.
