Wando High School’s girls soccer team will have to hit the road again Tuesday after its Class AAAA Lower State title game at Lexington was suspended Monday night.

The game was called with the score tied at 0-0 with 29 minutes left in the game. The game will resume at that point at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“There was tons of lightning around, so it was the right thing to do,” said Wando coach Shannon champ. “The field was holding water, so the ball would not have gone anywhere, so the decision was made for quality of play and safety.”

Champ said both teams had chances to score in the first part of the game.

“Lexington was having a good go at us in the second half,” she said. “They were playing very well.”

The suspension may prove to be a break for the 18-2 Warriors, even though they will have to travel again Tuesday.

“It could work either way,” Champ said. “It could work against us, because of so much travel. But it may also allow us time to regroup and realize that they gave us everything we could handle, and we need to be at our best.”

Wando is seeking its third straight state title and seventh under Champ. Lexington is 24-1-1 and has lost only to J.L. Mann, which took the Upper State title with a 2-1 win over Dutch Fork on Monday.
