The Wando boys and girls track and field teams got off to impressive starts on Day 1 of the Charleston Country Track and Field Championships.

Tuesday's prelims and finals in the field events were contested at Wando.

Day 2 is scheduled for West Ashley High School.

The Wando girls took two first-place finishes. Alinah Fordham won the high jump while Leighann Roberts won the pole vault.

James Island's Jocelyn Mack won the long jump while teammate Latisha White won the triple jump.

St. John's Michelle Smith and Bridget Smith won the shot put and discus, respectively.

In the boys competition, Wando's David Melton won the pole vault, Michael Klein won the shot and Desmond Venning won the discus.

St. John's High School's Rahmel Fordham won both jump events.
