MOUNT PLEASANT – A week after being held to 14 points in a narrow loss at Beaufort, Wando rebounded with a powerful offensive performance and success in the red zone to defeat Ashley Ridge, 45-26, Friday night at Wando Stadium.

Kenny Waring served as the offensive catalyst for the Warriors, rushing for 236 yards and three touchdowns. The junior running back now has six on the young season after also recording a trio of scores in the season opener against James Island.

“He’s got to get in shape,” said a tongue-in-cheek Wando coach Jimmy Noonan. “He was gassed.

“(Waring) doesn’t need much of a scene, but our offensive line absolutely took control of the game,” Noonan added. “They really set the tone tonight.”

Playing in their third of six games against Region 8-AAAA opponents to start the season, the Warriors (2-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on Waring’s 63-yard touchdown scamper.

Matt Norman’s interception of a Chandler Avenel pass attempt set the stage for a one-yard TD from Waring three plays later.

Ashley Ridge didn’t fold, though. After the Swamp Foxes’ Tyler Garland and Wando’s Kevin Brown exchanged one-yard touchdown runs, Garland hit paydirt from 39 yards to close the margin to 20-13 with 3:15 left before halftime.

The Warriors marched back into Ashley Ridge territory, but they were halted at the 20-yard line and Clayton Rosenbaum missed a 37-yard field-goal attempt with 13 seconds remaining.

Wando broke the game open with consecutive touchdowns to open the third quarter. Waring capped a 14-play, 79-yard opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, and Stubbs followed with a one-yard keeper for another score.

“I thought we’d have a better showing,” Swamp Foxes coach Kenny Walker said. “We didn’t look very prepared, and that’s my responsibility. The things we were prepared for, we didn’t execute.”

Walker hopes a pair of difficult games to start the season will prepare his team for the rest of the season. In its opening game, Ashley Ridge (0-2) dropped a 56-28 decision to Goose Creek.

Stubbs and sophomore Bailey Hart split time at quarterback for the Warriors. Hart completed 10 of 14 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown, while Stubbs added 50 yards on 12 carries.

“It is a two-headed monster,” Noonan said of his quarterback situation. “(Stubbs) is very, very comfortable running the football. He’s a very physical runner. (Hart) is doing a good job of seeing the field. They’re both team players.”

Wando outgained Ashley Ridge 501-308 in total offense.
