SUMMERVILLE — Heading into Friday’s game at Cane Bay, Wando fans wondered how the football team would respond after suffering its first defeat of the season last week against Goose Creek.

The answer? Not very well, at least for a half.

After an uninspiring first half, the Warriors were dominant in the final two quarters on the way to a 30-10 victory over Cane Bay. Wando improved to 9-1 and will face Sumter Friday in its regular season finale.

“I’m happy to win but we sure made a lot of mistakes and had a lot of penalties,” said Wando head coach Jimmy Noonan. “We did not play very well at all. Our execution was very poor. I’m disappointed overall but I thought we did a better job in the second half.”

Senior quarterback Christian Hart completed 15 of 25 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns, both to Rudder Brown in the second half.

Wando’s defense allowed 179 yards in the first half but stifled the Cobras in the final half, allowing only 34 total yards until Cane Bay’s final possession of the game.

“Our kids have to understand that we are not nearly good enough to not respect any team that we play on our schedule,” Noonan said. “We have to understand where we are at this time of year. To be a contender we have to be able to play four quarters and execute better than we did tonight.”

After each team came up empty on first-quarter scoring drives, the offenses picked up the pace in the second period.

Kenny Waring gave Wando a 7-0 lead on a two-yard run with 9:48 left in the second period but Cane Bay answered on four plays with Ramonte Frazier breaking free on a 59-yard touchdown jaunt with 7:46 left in the half. Frazier finished the night with 137 yards for the Cobras.

Cane Bay reached the Wando 14-yard line at the end of the half and George Anderson drilled a 36-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Cobras a 10-7 lead at the break.

Wando took advantage of a Cane Bay fumble early in the third quarter and Casey Clawson booted a 37-yard field goal with 7:24 to play, tying the game at 10.

Later in the third, Hart flipped a screen pass to Brown, who raced 34 yards down the sideline for a touchdown with 4:42 remaining. After Clawson missed the extra point, Wando held a 16-10 lead.

After a Cane Bay punt pinned Wando at its own seven, Stephen Wilson broke free for 87 yards on a third-down run, pushing the margin to 22-10 with 1:20 left in the third.

Wando tacked on a touchdown with six minutes left in the game as Hart combined with Brown on a 38-yard touchdown pass on third-and-goal.

Cane Bay dropped to 5-5 with its fourth consecutive loss and plays at West Ashley next week.

“We just have to find a way to win and get our confidence back,” said Cane Bay head coach Russell Zehr.
