MOUNT PLEASANT – Senior Jane Vardzel scored two goals to lead Wando High School to a 3-1 victory over West Ashley tonight in the Class AAAA Lower State girls’ soccer finals at Wando Stadium.

The Warriors (21-1) will try for their third straight state championship at 7 p.m. on Friday in Columbia, facing T.L. Hanna, the Upper State champ.

T.L. Hanna defeated Riverside, 1-0, on Monday night in the Upper State finals, and handed Wando its only loss of the season, beating the Warriors by 1-0 in the Viking Cup in March.

Against West Ashley, Wando took a 2-1 lead in the 46th minute on a neat give-and-go by Vardzel and junior Hannah Ross. Senior Nora Bishop played the ball forward, with Vardzel passing to Ross, then getting the ball back and slipping a shot inside the left post.

Freshman Raymara Barreto made it 3-1 in the 62nd minute, looping in a left-footed free kick from about 30 yards out.

Wando went up 1-0 labout 12 minutes into the match, when Vardzel, bound for Charleston Southern next year, put a bullet into the near corner from the 18-yard line.

The Wildcats (17-7) answered just two minutes later, as Mary Shirley chipped in a shot on a breakaway to knot the match at 1-1, where the score stood at halftime.
