Wando's boys basketball team won its first Roundball Classic in 1994 and had to endure a 15-year drought before finally winning another title last winter.

The Warriors won't have to wait as long to claim another title if Tuesday night's effort is any indication. The Warriors dominated a solid Porter-Gaud team and came away with a 63-37 victory at North Charleston High School in the opening round of the 19th annual Piggly Wiggly Roundball Classic.

The Warriors won 22 games and the Region 7-AAAA title last year, but the best highlight of the season might have come in the Roundball Classic. The team used solid defense and the 1-2 offensive punch of John Swinton and Naji Pasha to beat Peachtree Ridge (Georgia) to win the Communities in Schools bracket championship.

Tuesday, the Warriors (9-1) had 10 players enter the scoring column against Porter-Gaud, a perennial SCISA power, and held a 50-26 advantage in rebounding. The Warriors hit 57 percent of their 3-point attempts in the first half and finished at 37 percent for the night.

Wando coach David Eaton said repeating as champions is in the back of his players' minds, but added, "This is a new year, new team and a new tournament field -- a whole new situation."

Eaton said his team has to focus on the present, which now includes a second-round game against John Carroll at 4 p.m. Thursday.

John Carroll advanced with a 72-41 win over Manning. North Charleston topped Don Bosco Prep 65-49 in the nightcap.

Eaton said his team struggled offensively in the team's first nine games. "We had to rely on defense. We focused on out-toughing the other team, outhustling them to the ball and playing strong defense. We feel if we put defensive pressure on the other team, it can open things up offensively at the other end."

Elijah LeGree led the Warriors with 11 points, despite hitting only 2 of 8 from the field. He knocked down 5 of 6 from the foul line, and collected five rebounds. Terrance Jenkins added 10 points, hitting 4 of 5 from the field. He grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots. Jenkins had a big role in his team's success last year. He scored a deciding three-point play late in last year's Roundball Classic semifinal against Franklin County, Ga.

K.J. James led Porter-Gaud with 14 points and six rebounds. Michael Preddy had 11 points.

North Charleston 65, Don Bosco Prep 49

North Charleston picked up another impressive win under first-year coach Blake Hall with the win over Don Bosco Prep.

The Cougars upped their record to 7-2 behind the fine play of James Brown and Bernard Samuel. Brown hit 10 of 12 from the field and finished with 25 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Samuel hit 7 of 14 from the field and finished with 20 points and three rebounds. Anthony Williams added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Cougars will play the winner of the Pinewood Prep-Bullis School game at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Cougars led by eight at halftime, 31-23, and shot 57 percent from the field in the second half for Don Bosco Prep (4-1). DaJon Todmann led the Ironmen with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Jemal Mosley added 14 points and five steals.

John Carroll 72, Manning 41

Maryland power John Carroll won 33 games last season and is on pace for another great season after a victory over Manning.

The Patriots (13-2) hit 45 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point land to win easily. Rodney Elliott scored 20 points, hitting all three of his 3-point attempts. He also hit 9 of 12 from the foul line. Jarred Jones collected 16 points and five rebounds. Justin Jenifer accounted for 12 points and three assists.

Phillip Henry led the Monarchs (4-7) with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
