New Clemson men’s basketball assistant coach James Johnson has quickly become a former assistant with the program, accepting the head coaching position at Virginia Tech on Monday.

Clemson coach Brad Brownell confirmed the departure to the Post and Courier.

Johnson was the top assistant under former Hokies head coach Seth Greenberg prior to arriving at Clemson earlier this month. Greenberg was fired on April 24.

Johnson had been at Virginia Tech since 2007.

Johnson was also an assistant coach at the College of Charleston in 2002-03 under Tom Herrion when the Cougars went 25-8 overall and won the regular season.

Johnson is known as a standout recruiter, especially in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Clemson had hired Johnson to replace Rick Ray who left to become the head coach at Mississippi State earlier this year.

Johnson did not immediately return a phone call Monday.
