Elena Vesnina did not win the Family Circle Cup singles title Sunday, but she did not leave Daniel Island empty-handed. Vesnina, who lost Sunday to world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the singles final, teamed with Sania Mirza to win the Family Circle Cup doubles title.
Vesnina and Mirza defeated the American team of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Meghann Shaughnessy 6-4, 6-4, on Stadium Court.
Vesnina and Mirza won their second doubles title on the WTA Tour this season. They split the $35,500 first-place prize.
Winners and unforced errors
Looking back on a week of winners and unforced errors at the Family Circle Cup:
--Winner: Vesnina won over a lot of fans with her gutty play, on-court emotions and genuine demeanor in news conferences. Her ranking will rise from No. 56 into the top 45 after making the finals, and there could be good things ahead for the 24-year-old Russian.
--Unforced error: Samantha Stosur. The world's No. 5 player and defending Family Circle Cup champ went quietly in the third round, raising questions about the state of her game heading to the red clay.
--Winner: Charleston's own Shelby Rogers went 0 for 2 in matches at the Family Circle Cup, but the experience here will be invaluable to the 18-year-old fledgling pro. Plus, she got to feel just how much Charleston is rooting for her.
--Winner: Christina McHale. Another 18-year-old American hopeful, McHale knocked off No. 33 Daniela Hantuchova on the way to the quarterfinals, and she will make her U.S. Fed Cup debut next week.
--Unforced error: WTA Tour. Officials probably could have found a better way to handle Wozniacki's post-finals press conference. She took all of two questions because she had to make a flight in order to get to an exhibition match today in Monaco.
--Winner: Murphy Jensen. The personable master of ceremonies went above and beyond the call of duty, playing in an exhibition match with Rogers and entertaining fans between matches.
--Winner: Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Some fans don't dig her unusual look -- high socks and basketball shoes -- but others find it refreshingly different.
Woz on Twitter
Wozniacki (@CaroWozniacki) did have time to tweet after winning Sunday: "Won my third title of the year today! So happy! Thanks for the support! Now on my way to the airport going back home."
Million fan march
A Sunday crowd of 8,164 brought total attendance at the Family Circle Cup to 94,241 for the week.
That's the second-best total for the tournament's 11 years on Daniel Island, just behind last year's record of 95,767. The tournament should crack the 1 million fan mark for its tenure in Charleston next year -- the 11-year total stands at 987,674.
