USC’s Garnet & Black World Series on deck

— The South Carolina baseball team will conclude fall scrimmages this week with the annual Garnet & Black World Series at Carolina Stadium.

All three games are open to the public. The first game is set for Friday at 4 p.m., with the series continuing on Saturday at 1 p.m. and wrapping up on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

South Carolina, which won the College World Series in 2010 and 2011, has 11 CWS appearances, including six in the last 12 years.

The Gamecocks open their 2014 season with a three-game series against Bucknell beginning Feb. 14 at Carolina Stadium.

The Citadel rifle team took second place with an air rifle mark of 2274 at the third Southeastern Air Rifle Conference match of the season at the Inouye Marksmanship Center.

Robert Jackson carded a team-high air rifle score of 572, Richard Hunton and Ashten Byrne fired marks of 569, and Teddi Haliscak rounded out the Bulldogs’ top four shooters with a mark of 564.

Sixteenth-ranked N.C. State took first place with a score of 2,309 to maintain its position atop the SEARC standings. The Citadel sits in second place, with North Georgia trailing closely behind in third.

In NCAA smallbore action, Jackson led the Bulldogs with a 565 mark to take fifth place overall. Hunton and Moy recorded scores of 560 and 552, respectively, while first-year shooter Patrick Meyer rounded out the top four in smallbore with a 544.

The Bulldogs will stay at home for a match against Georgia Southern and Wofford this weekend at the Inouye Marksmanship Center. It will be a first-ever meeting for The Citadel and Georgia Southern as the Eagles added women’s rifle to its intercollegiate program in 2013.

College of Charleston junior libero Andi Zbojniewicz was named the CAA Defensive player of the week. The honor is the first conference award for Zbojniewicz in her CofC career and the fifth CAA weekly award for the Cougars this season.

Zbojniewicz led the Cougars to two victories last weekend over William & Mary and James Madison. She tallied 20 digs in the win on Friday and followed that up with a career-high 28 digs in Sunday’s win, averaging 6.86 digs per set. Zbojniewicz now has a season average of 3.42 digs/set and 4.0 in CAA play.

Charleston (17-4, 7-0) looks to stay unbeaten in CAA play with a single home match Saturday at 2 p.m. against UNCW.
