South Carolina defensive backs coach Lorenzo Ward has shuffled the Gamecocks' secondary in preparation for Saturday's game with Navy.
DeVonte Holloman was moved from spur to strong safety and D.J. Swearinger has moved from strong safety to free safety.
Free safety Jimmy Legree struggled against Georgia this past weekend.
"We need to get two physical guys on the field," Ward said. "This ballgame and who we're facing has more to do with the move than anything. Jimmy didn't do a very good job of tackling on Saturday and he knows it. In this game, you need physical safeties that can fight through blocks and get to the pitch man."
Ward said he's not sure if the move for Holloman will be permanent.
"We'll play it by ear," Ward said. "If we see an improvement and get Brison Williams back, we might send him back to spur. We'll keep him at safety until we develop some solid depth at safety."
Holloman was excited to be back at safety.
"It feels good to be back there," Holloman said. "Like I said before, I just want to make plays, so wherever the coaches put me, I'm going to try and make the best of it."
To get ready for Navy's triple-option rushing attack, the Gamecocks' defensive unit practice without a ball. The Midshipmen lead the nation in rushing, averaging more than 400 per game.
The key to stopping an option attack is to be disciplined and not blowing assignments, Ward said. Which was why the Gamecocks' defense practiced without a ball.
"It was different, but it made you concentrate on your assignments," Holloman said. "You can't follow the ball and I think it'll pay off for during the game."
Auguste out for Navy game
Cornerback Akeem Auguste will miss this week's game with Navy, Ward said.
Ward said he hopes to have Auguste back in two weeks against Vanderbilt. Auguste has battled a foot injury since preseason camp.
Auguste recorded four tackles against Georgia.
Cornerback C.C. Whitlock was in a non-contact yellow jersey during practice on Monday. Whitlock injured his neck against Georgia, but is expected to be in the lineup on Saturday. Freshman running back Shon Carson will also miss this weekend's game. He injured his knee in the first half against Georgia.
