HANAHAN -- Defending champion North Carolina counted two 69s, a 70 and a 74 Monday en route to a 6-under-par 282 and climbed into first place in the Cougar Classic women's college golf tournament at Yeamans Hall Club.

The Tar Heels are at 9-under-par 567 heading into today's final round of the 54-hole tournament. Florida trails UNC by one shot. LSU is four back.

South Carolina senior Katie Burnett, who won the Women's Eastern Amateur played at Yeamans Hall in June, posted the best round of the day, a 6-under-par 66, to help the Gamecocks jump six spots into 11th at 590. The host College of Charleston team dropped three spots to 12th at 602, one shot ahead of Furman. Charleston Southern is at 643.

Tennessee's Erica Popson kept the individual lead with a 3-under 69 for a 135 total. She made three birdies and did not bogey a hole Monday. Austin Ernst, an LSU sophomore from Seneca, also shot 69 with five birdies and two bogeys and is second at 136. Ernst Casey Grice of UNC (138) and Camilla Hedberg of Florida (138) are tied for third and Burnett is tied for fifth at 139 with LSU's Tessa Teachman.

Today's final round will feature a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The event is open to the public.
