After having a 6-under-par 66 wiped out because of Wednesday’s heavy rainstorm, Maverick Antcliff was pleased to be back at the top of the leaderboard after Thursday’s official opening round of the Rice Planters Amateur golf tournament.

Antcliff and Arizona State golfer Spencer Lawson shot 4-under 68s and head a crowded leaderboard in the tournament being played at Snee Farm Country Club.

Thirty-three golfers are even par and within four shots of the lead in the event that has been shortened to 54 holes because of Wednesday’s rainout, which dumped more than four inches of rain on the course.

Nine players posted 69s, including former College of Charleston golfer Austin Parks and current Cougar Zach Munroe.

Austin Cody, the 2011 Rice Planters winner, opened with a 71 and is tied for 17th, while defending champion Thomas Bradshaw of Clemson is tied for 25th after an even-par 72.

Antcliff said he tried to forget the 66 and treat Thursday as a first round. He is the only player in this year’s field from Australia and just completed his freshman year at Augusta State.

“It was a lot wetter, a lot tougher. I thought it was windier,” said Antcliff, who had five birdies and only one bogey. “It was pretty solid. I hit 16 greens and I putted well.”

Lawson, who lives in Davidson, N.C., and just finished his junior season at Arizona State, made six birdies against two bogeys. Earlier this month, he won the North Carolina Open by three shots.

Tee times Friday begin at 8 a.m., with the leaders teeing off at 1 p.m. The field will be cut for Saturday’s final round.
