Tsurutis wins 2nd Ladies City Amateur

The second Ladies City Amateur golf championship was just as sweet as the first for self-described “Muni Rat” Victoria Tsurutis.

Tsurutis, who grew up playing Charleston Municipal Golf Course and now is a 27-year-old pharmacist at MUSC, shot a 2-over-par 74 Saturday and her 36-hole total of 145 was good for a five-shot victory over 2013 winner Colleen Estes and Meghan Taylor.

Ansley Vaughan finished fourth at 151 while defending champion Savannah Hallman was fifth at 156.

Terry Rickson chipped in for birdie on the first hole of sudden death to win the Ladies City Senior over Tori Langen. Rickson and Langen deadlocked in regulation with 36-hole totals of 158.

“I knew I had been playing well,” said Tsurutis, who previously won the title in 2009. “I bogeyed the first three holes, but I was able to turn things around.”

Tsurutis didn’t make another bogey the rest of the day, reeling off 12 consecutive pars before recording her first birdie with an approach to two feet at No. 16. She hit her approach to six feet but missed the birdie putt on 17, then on the closing hole with other “Muni Rats” watching she gunned in a 20-footer for birdie to clinch the victory.

She said the reason she played so well this year was “desire and motivation.” In the weeks leading up to the Ladies City Amateur she had been part of winning member-guest teams at Snee Farm and Bulls Bay.

“I’ve also begun working with (The Ranch at Bulls Bay golf instructor) Rickey Sullivan again,” Tsurutis said. “He’s really made a difference. He said he was going to turn me into a player. I’m getting more distance off the tee and with my approach shots and he’s helped me with the mental aspect.”
