Two wrestlers who helped Hanahan win the Class AA state championship recently earned All-America honors.
Dennis Flores and J.J. Johnson, who helped lead the Hawks to a Class AA state championship this past winter, both placed eighth in their respective weight classes in the National High School Coaches Association's Sophomore Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va., to earn their prestigious titles.
Summerville's Jordan Wigger was the only other Lowcountry participant to earn All-America status, placing sixth with a record of 5-3 in the Senior Nationals at 112 pounds.
The Hanahan wrestlers capped off the best season in Hanahan history.
"Both kids had an attitude that they would not be denied," Hanahan coach Ray Adkins told the Goose Creek Gazette. "I'm very proud of their commitment and accomplishments."
Johnson and Flores were representing Pit Bull Wrestling Club in the national event. Johnson competed at 112 pounds and Flores was at 152 pounds, one weight class above the one he won an individual title in this past season.
"They have set a very high standard for the high school and their Pit Bull teams," Adkins said.
Of the 48 wrestlers from the Palmetto State that competed in the nationals, only six came back with all-America status.
Williams-Brice Stadium out of mix
The High School League's Executive Committee has accepted proposals from Clemson and Benedict to hold the league's state football championships this fall, meaning South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium will not host any state championship games for the first time since 2008.
The Division I-AAAA and II-AAAA games will be played Dec. 3 at Clemson.
The Class AA championship will be held Dec. 2 at Benedict's Charlie W. Johnson Memorial Stadium. The Executive Committee will vote at its April 28 meeting on Class AA's proposal to split into two divisions.
The Class A championships will be played Nov. 25 at Benedict.
