USC can already think about Auburn, SEC title game

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton accounted for five touchdowns in the Tigers’ 35-27 win over South Carolina earlier this season.

HANAHAN -- Timberland and Hanahan met for the second time this season. And for the second time this season, Hanahan suffered a major injury to a key player and came up on the short end.

Timberland running back Classe Thompson scored three touchdowns, the last coming with 10:15 to play in the game to lift the Wolves to a 28-21 win over the Hawks.

Timberland (12-1) advances to the Class AA Division I Lower State title game next week at top-ranked Dillon.

Behind the legs and arm of junior quarterback Anthony Smalls, the home-standing Hawks were tied at 21 after two quarters. Smalls had 121 yards passing and 99 yards rushing, including a 67-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game.

Smalls, however, injured a shoulder late in the second quarter and did not play in the second half. In week two of the regular season, Hanahan lost receiver Chris Brown in the second quarter, trailing, 21-14, at the half before losing 56-14.

"Obviously not having their quarterback changed the complexion of the game and it's unfortunate, but our guys played with great intensity and heart and beat a good football team tonight," said Timberland head coach Art Craig.

"I thought the difference in the game was our ability to throw the football some and then our defense had a great second half."

Timberland quarterback Taylor Elizondo was indeed a major factor in the game. Elizondo completed nine of 16 passes for 147 yards and added 70 yards rushing.

Thompson added 117 yards rushing to go with his three scores.

After Smalls' early score, Timberland tied the score on Elizondo's two-yard run with :19 left in the first quarter.

After a rolling punt hit a Timberland player on the foot, Hanahan needed one play to score, a 24-yard pass from Smalls to Mario Gates for a 14-7 lead with 10:22 to play in the first half.

Special teams played a part on the next two Timberland scores. The Wolves' Chauncey Prioleau blocked a punt and Timberland recovered the loose ball at the Hanahan four-yard line.

Thompson scored on the next play, a four-yard run, to tie the game with 4:58 to play in the half.

On Hanahan's next possession, punter Kyle Spigner's hit the ground while fielding a low snap and Timberland took over at the Hanahan 35 and Thompson scored on a 17-yard run with 2:16 to play.

Hanahan went 56 yards on eight plays, tying the game at 21 with :03 left when Smalls connected with Chris Brown on an 11-yard pass.

After a scoreless third period, Thompson gave the Wolves the lead for good, scoring on a 40-yard run with 10:15 to play in the game.
