What to know about Appalachian State: The Mountaineers have 20 returning starters, out of a possible 22 ... after taking six in a row to close 2014 and blanking Howard 49-0 Saturday, Appalachian State’s seven-game winning streak is the fifth-longest in the nation, trailing Ohio State (13), Boise State (10), TCU (9) and Memphis (8) ... by the way, Clemson’s four-game winning streak is tied for ninth in the nation ... in 2014, the Mountaineers were top-15 in the nation in yards allowed per rush, 3rd-down offense and 3rd-down defense, and 25th overall in total defense ... Appalachian State’s opener was a routine 49-0 victory over Howard, in which quarterback Taylor Lamb completed 16-of-21 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns, six different Mountaineers found the end zone and Howard gained just 172 yards and eight first downs ... two former Clemson players are on Appalachian State’s coaching staff: first-year WRs coach Justin Watts, who caught 51 passes from 1996-2000, and secondary coach Scot Sloan, who walked on from 1988-91 and was a graduate assistant from 1992-95.

When last they met: Clemson 23, Appalachian State 12 on Sept. 6, 1997 in Clemson

All-time series: Clemson leads 4-0, all in Clemson, with games spanning 1984-97.

Which Clemson Tigers are licking their chops: Freshman receivers Trevion Thompson and Ray-Ray McCloud. Their roles increase exponentially this week with Mike Williams sidelined indefinitely with a broken bone in his neck. Long-term: junior Germone Hopper steps into the starting lineup while senior Charone Peake slides over into Williams’ long-ball spot.

Whos keeping the Clemson coaches up at night: Senior running back Marcus Cox (5-10, 200), who led the Sun Belt Conference last year with 19 touchdowns and already has 11 carries for 105 yards and a score this year vs. Howard. Also, take note of the quarterback Lamb, who led the Sun Belt in passer rating and yards per attempt in 2014.

Extra point: Appalachian State starting outside linebacker Devan Stringer graduated from Gainesville (Ga.) High School the same year as Clemson sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson. According to Clemson’s game notes, Stringer was a teammate and longtime friend of Watson, and Stringer’s family often housed Watson while his mother was in the hospital battling tongue cancer.
