The Citadel 14, Samford 6

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Former Summerville High standout Bryan Altman went 4 for 6 with a homer, four RBIs and four runs scored as The Citadel blasted Samford, 14-6, on Saturday in baseball.

Every hitter reached base for the Bulldogs (29-16, 17-3 Southern Conference), including Grant Richards, who drove in a team-high five runs, and Brad Felder, who went 4 for 5.

Matt Talley was strong over seven innings for the Bulldogs, striking out five and allowing three runs -- one earned -- on eight hits and a walk.

The teams conclude the weekend series at 1 p.m. today.

"We were fortunate to take advantage of some of their early miscues," said Bulldogs coach Fred Jordan. "After that, we swung the bats well and Matt Talley had another outstanding performance for us on the mound."

The Citadel was able to jump on Samford early on RBI singles by Altman, an RBI groundout by Kyle Jordan and a two-run single by Richards, making it 4-0 in the first inning.

In the third, the Bulldogs would capitalize on three Samford errors in the inning to score two more runs.

The Bulldogs tacked on four more runs in the fourth, and after a sacrifice fly by Richards, The Citadel led, 10-0.

In the top of the ninth, Richards collected his career-high fifth run as he ripped a double down the left field line that scored Justin Mackert, who scored four times in the game.

Talley (5-2) stretched his scoreless streak to 20 1/3 innings until Samford scored in the seventh. The southpaw has won three consecutive starts.
