GREENSBORO, N.C. -- For the third time this season, The Citadel volleyball team earned a victory by virtue of a sweep, defeating North Carolina A&T, 25-13, 25-15, 27-25.
Led by junior outside hitter Kaona Mercer, who finished with match-high performances in kills (13) and digs (eight), the Bulldogs improved to 5-2.
Mercer was joined in kills by teammates Amanda Rudnik, who posted five to go along with four digs, and Ise d'Angelo, who notched four kills and four digs. The tandem of Alexa Dahlstrom and Erin Bucherl combined for 30 assists, while freshmen Haley Corson proved to be a solid defensive presence with six digs.
The Citadel limited N.C. A&T (0-11) to 18 team kills.
The Citadel next plays today at 4 p.m. when it faces Towson in Raleigh.
The College of Charleston gave up three first-half goals in a 3-0 loss to No. 5 Duke in Durham, N.C.
The Cougars fell to 4-4, while Duke improves to 8-1.
The Cougars (4-4) played better in the second half and did a better job in thwarting the heavy attack of the Blue Devils (8-1).
"I think in the first half we came out a little timid, and in this game it's the simple things," said Cougars coach Christian Michner. "We sorted it out at halftime and the kids came out on fire."
The Cougars next host Appalachian State on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.
