COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson will speak at an event sponsored by a group that opposes gay marriage next week after Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney canceled.

The State newspaper reports Wilson has agreed to speak at the Palmetto Family Council’s Celebrating Families event in Columbia.

Swinney dropped out Wednesday, saying he did not realize he had been invited to an event that was generating political controversy.

House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford of Columbia had asked Swinney not to appear at the event, where he was to receive the group’s “South Carolina Family Champion of 2015” award. Rutherford cited the Palmetto Family Council’s fight against same-sex marriage.

Wilson has fought against federal court rulings allowing gay marriage in South Carolina.
