Summerville gymnasts medal in Carolina Classic

Members of the Summerville YMCA gymnastics team scored well in the Carolina Classic Gymnastics Competition held in Columbia.

Ashley Walker, a Level 8 competitor, finished first on Beam with a 9.0, placed second on Vault with an 8.55, was third All-Around with a 34 and tied for third on Bars with an 8.05. Bethany Speciale, also a Level 8, placed third on Floor with a 9.025. The Level 8 team placed third with a combined 66.8.

In Level 6, Rileigh Koellner took first on Floor with a 9.525 and All-Around with a 36.8. Makayla Wolf tied for second on Floor with a 9.175 and placed third All-Around with a 35.175. Wolf tied for first on Vault with a 9.225 and placed third on beam with a 9.05. Lauren Penny finished first on Vault with a 9.35. Grace King placed first place on Floor with a 9.65. The Level 6 Team placed second with a combined 109.10.

In Level 4, Nicole Askins finished first on Beam with a 9.375 while Payton Myers placed third on Beam with a 9.025.

In Level 3, Samantha Smith took firsts on Vault with an 8.8, on Bars with an 8.3 and All-Around with a 25.725. Lindsey Young placed second on Vault with a 9.0 and on Beam with an 8.85. Young placed third on Floor with an 8.625. Madison Drake placed second on Floor with a 9.075 and tied for second on Bars with a 9.05. Abigail Debney placed first on Vault with a 9.2 and second on Bars with a 9.2. Kendal Carter tied for first on Floor with a 9.05.

In Level 2, Grace Dalton won Beam with a 9.4. She placed second on Vault with an 8.9 and on Bars with a 7.7. Dalton also placed second on Floor with an 8.85 and on All-Around with a 34.85. Paiton Stevens won first All-Around with a 35.55. Kylie Lewis won first place All-Around in her age group with a 35.5. Rachel Henry won first place on Beam with a 9.7. Henry also placed second on Vault with a 9.0 and on Floor with an 8.95. Layla Anderson, a Level 2, won Floor with a 9.1. Anderson placed third on Beam with a 9.4 and All-Around with a 35.55. Kylie West placed second on Bars with a 9.0. Marley Eustace placed second on Vault with a 9.35.

Molly Jackson, a Level 1, placed third on Floor with an 8.6. Shannon Freeman, a Bronze, placed third place on Bars with a 9.3.

The 2015 Elks Hoop Shoot “Free Throw” Contest will be held from 8-11 a.m. Jan. 24 at St. Joseph Catholic Church Gym located in West Ashley. Registration is free and begins at 8 a.m. Competition is open to boys and girls in age groups 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 as of April 1, 2015. Registration for Charleston Recreation Department’s Spring Sports is open through Jan. 31. Sports include baseball, softball, micro soccer, micro soccer 3-year-old clinic, lacrosse, track club, Smart Start Development (West Ashley only). Elite Futsal Charleston will hold clinics Monday at Riverside Sports in Mount Pleasant. The cost is $4.
