Summerville defeated Stratford, 13-2, in five innings Monday to eliminate the Knights from the Class AAAA baseball playoffs.
The Green Wave travels to Sumter on Wednesday looking to avenge a 1-0 loss to the Gamecocks last week and force a third and decisive game for the District 8 Championship. If Sumter wins at 6 p.m., it will claim the title, if not, a winner-take-all game will follow.
“I will take my chances with these guys,” Summerville coach Banks Faulkner said. “We are planning on being in Sumter a long time Wednesday night.”
Stratford (15-11) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Jamison Mobbs opened the inning with a double off the left-center field fence. Justin Walker reached on a bunt, and a high throw to third allowed Mobbs to score. Walker then scored on two groundouts.
Summerville (24-3) answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs.
“We came out and had a bad break and you could just sort of feel it,” Faulkner said. “Then they scored two runs to put us in a hole, but these kids are just so resilient. I can’t say enough about our players and the way they responded.”
Summerville added eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach. The turn at bat included a double by Wilson Beattie that plated two runs and a double by Zach Heaton that drove in three runs.
Charlie Fessler (6-0) pitched all five innings and only allowed two hits — the double by Mobbs and a single by Eddie Hiott.
T.J. Hopkins collected two hits and scored three times, and Tre Tucker added two hits for Summerville.
