Three of the top four players in the Golfweek Senior Amateur rankings are among the 126 golfers who will tee off today in the 20th Senior Azalea Invitational tournament at the Country Club of Charleston.

Bill Zylstra of Plymouth, Mich., the 2009 Senior Azalea and No. 1-ranked senior player, No. 3 Ted Smith of Wilkinson, Ind., and No. 4 Ron Carter of Monticello, Ind., join defending champion Buzz Peel of Delray Beach, Fla., in the 54-hole event that continues through Friday.

Other top competitors include Frank Ford III of Charleston, who finished third in this year's British Senior Amateur, as well as former champions Snow; Mike Rice of Houston; Steve Johnson of MeQuon, Wis.; Ben Shadoan of Taylors; Heyward Sullivan of Greenville; Walt Martin of Oakton, Va.; and Curtis Wagner of Peachtree City, Ga.

The tournament is for golfers 55 and older. Tee times run from 7:45 a.m. until 1:34 p.m. today and Thursday, and the event is open to the public.

-- The Charleston Southern men placed third with an 849 total at the 10-team Dash Thomas Memorial in Boise, Idaho. San Jose State (827) placed first.

College baseball

A visit from two-time defending national champion South Carolina highlights The Citadel's 56-game 2012 schedule released Tuesday.

The Gamecocks come to Riley Park on March 27, with the Bulldogs playing at USC on April 10. The Citadel will play 33 home games, including the first 16 games of the season.

--The three-game South Carolina-Clemson weekend series next season will open in Charleston at Riley Park.

The 2012 game in Charleston is set for Friday, March 2, with the series shifting to Carolina Stadium in Columbia on March 3 and the finale on March 4 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson.

In 2013, the teams’ three-game series will include a matchup at Greenville’s Fluor Field.

College volleyball

The College of Charleston (11-7) posted a 3-1 triumph at Coastal Carolina (6-11) in its non-conference finale. C of C won, 18-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-21. Sloane White led the Cougars with a season-best 16 kills.
