INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Freshman Dena O'Brien will have an opportunity to add to her impressive first season at the College of Charleston as she has made the list of participants in the Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships.

O'Brien will compete in the 5,000-meter run in one of two regions, the East region, which will be hosted by Indiana University, May 26-28 in Bloomington, Ind. The West region meet will be hosted by Oregon in Eugene, Ore., on the same days.

O'Brien, who has set seven College of Charleston school records this year has run the 19th fastest time in the field for the East region (16 minutes, 21.35 seconds) and will look to finish in the top-12 to qualify for the NCAA Championships held June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.

--A record total of 36 student-athletes from Clemson earned official bids to the East Preliminary Round.


A field of 32 golfers will start play today in the Ladies City Amateur being played at Charleston Municipal Golf Course. The 54-hole tournament continues through Sunday, with tee times running from 8-9:10 a.m.

Karen Keefe, who won last year's title by two shots over Kacie Braxton, leads the regular division. Keefe finished with a three-round total of 233. Cynthia Andereck will defend her title in the seniors division.

College Basketball

South Carolina will host Providence as part of the Big East/SEC Challenge this fall.

The Gamecocks and Friars have played seven times with Providence holding a 4-3 edge. The teams last met in 2007, when South Carolina took a 68-67 victory in a game that was also part of the Big East/SEC Challenge.
