South Carolina runs away with Hootie title

Behind top finisher Keenan Huskey, South Carolina cruised to a 15-stroke victory over runner-up College of Charleston to defend their tournament title at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

The Gamecocks finished at 23-under-par 841 after an 8-under 280, with the Cougars at 8-under 856, Auburn at 861, Wake Forest at 864 and Charleston Southern rounding out the top five at 866 at Bulls Bay Golf Club.

USC sophomore Huskey, buoyed by an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole, fired a final-round 69 to finish at 11-under 205.

“I was just in control of my game the entire week,” Huskey said. “I think we’re all peaking at the right time. It’s pretty exciting to see what we can do in the postseason.”

College of Charleston’s William Rainey was six strokes back at 5-under 211 after an xx in the final round. Charleston Southern’s Austin James shot a 74 in the final round and finished in a tie for third at 3-under 213.

The tournament victory is the 18th in the career of coach Bill McDonald. It’s also the fourth win of the season for the Gamecocks, which matches 1990-91 and 2008-09 for the second-best total in school history. The five tournament titles from 2014-15 stand as the top mark in in the Gamecocks record book.

Playing the season — and tournament — in memory of their late teammate Jackson Moore, the Cougars carded rounds of 290-281-285—856. Charleston now has six top-5 finishes in nine tournaments this season.

Bulls Bay was the home course for Moore, an Isle of Palms native who died in November. Huskey, the individual medalist, received an award named in memory of Jackson which will be given to the individual medalist for years to come.

Cougars sophomore Anthony Gabriele and junior Philip Oweida tied for 10th at 1 under.

James, a junior, paced the Bucs, who shot a 6-over 294 in the final round. CSU finished ahead of Missouri (+4), Duke (+6), Kansas (+7) and N.C. State (+8), among others. Sophomore R.J. Keur played his final 13 holes 3-under to finish with a final round 71. He had three birdies on the day to climb back into the top 20 at 19th.

Wofford finished in 12th at 885. Daniel Island native Jeremy Grab, who played at Bishop England, tied for 19th at 217 after a final round 75. Mount Pleasant native and former Academic Magnet standout Andrew Novak (78) finished at 218.
