Area high school sophomores led the way during the Lowcountry Splash on Saturday morning.

Around 500 participated in the 2.4-mile Cooper River event in which competitors swam from Hobcaw Point in Mount Pleasant to the aircraft carrier at Patriots Point.

Two swimmers from Wando High School grabbed first-place honors with sophomore Dirk Bell winning the male division in 42 minutes, 48 seconds.

Classmate Megan Kingsley won the female division in 46:27.

Rounding out the top three among male swimmers were second-place Matthew Adams and third-place Travis Morrin, both sophomores at Wando.

Trailing Kingsley in the female competition were runner-up Logan Kraft (47:00) and third-place finisher Hannah Craig (47:04).

Champions in the over-under competition, which combines results from the Lowcountry Splash and the Cooper River Bridge Run held in April, were Kingsley and Brent Demarest, a sophomore at Porter-Gaud.
