Thomas Heyward 10, Colleton Prep 0
RIDGELAND -- It was deja vu in Game 2 for the Colleton Prep softball team, as Thomas Heyward followed Monday's dominant outing by battering the War Hawks, 10-0, in five innings Tuesday to win the SCISA Class AA state championship.
The Rebels, who opened the title series with a 12-1 rout of Colleton Prep Monday in Walterboro, were equally impressive on their home field, pounding War Hawk pitching for 12 hits to sweep the series.
Thomas Heyward (28-3) scored in four of the five innings Tuesday but did most of the damage right out the gate.
The Rebels led 4-0 before CPA starter Brittan Carter could record the first out and sent 11 batters to the plate in a five-hit, six-run first frame that also included a pair of Colleton Prep errors.
The Rebels also got another dominant outing from starter Ashley Layman, who picked up her second win in as many days with a complete-game shutout.
The junior did not allow an earned run in 11 innings of work during the state title series.
The War Hawks, playing in their third consecutive state title series, never could muster much of a threat, managing just two hits advancing just one runner past second base.
"It's disappointing to make it this far and lose," said Colleton Prep coach Mallory Crawford. "It was a good season. We had a lot of ups and downs. There was a bunch of times we didn't play up to our potential, and we definitely didn't do that in our last two games."
The Rebels were led by Taylor Ernestine, who was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and a pair of RBIs. Leadoff hitter Briana Kelnhoffer was 3-for-4.
Colleton Prep finishes at 25-13.
