Weather conditions on land may not have been ideal Thursday, but offshore fishing conditions were good for participants in the Bohicket Marina Invitational Billfish Tournament.

Wallace Jenkins, program coordinator for the South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series, said there was a gentle swell on the ocean.

“It’s not often you get to participate in a billfish tournament and a tropical storm party at the same time,” Jenkins said, referencing Tropical Storm Andrea.

Seventeen of the 18 entries in the second event of the South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series were able to fish and had a productive day, releasing six blue marlin and nine sailfish.

Showtime took the lead with 1,400 points, releasing two blue marlin and a sailfish. Showtime is owned by Fred Hardwick and captained by Wink Doerzbaher.

Cacique, owned by Paul Coury and captained by Harvey Shiflet, is second with 1,200 points for releasing two blue marlin. Rascal, owned by Norman Pulliam and captained by Mark Rogers, is third with 1,000 points for a blue marlin and two sailfish.

The only meatfish weighed Thursday was a 34.6-pound dolphin caught by Sportin’ Life, owned by Manley and Graham Eubank.

Governor’s Cup participants are allowed to fish two out of three days, captain’s choice, and all boats have indicated they will not fish today.
