Sertoma Classic lineup set

Two-time defending Class AA state champion Bishop England and three teams expected to be ranked in the top 10 in Class AAAA will play in the marquee games of the 43nd annual Sertoma Football Classic.

The Sertoma Club announced on Tuesday that this year’s jamboree will feature 28 teams.

The classic, sponsored by CT Lowndes & Co., will be held Aug. 22-23 at The Citadel’s Johnson Hagood Stadium. The gates will open at 5 p.m. with action beginning at 5:45 p.m. both nights.

“Our goal this year is to provide the best possible, most creative and entertaining venue for the entire family to come out and experience the kickoff to high school football in the Lowcountry,” said Sertoma Classic spokesperson John Panagiotou.

“All of this with the intent to raise more money than ever before to give to the local children’s charities that we support.”

One of the highlights of the first day includes a Hanahan vs. Wando showdown. The Warriors had their best regular season ever last fall, finishing with a 10-1 record. The teams will play two quarters.

Another interesting matchup is the two-quarter scrimmage between James Island and Stratford. The Knights have one of the top quarterbacks in the Southeast, Jacob Park, and look to be a top 10 team in Class AAAA.

The second night features two big showdowns. Bishop England will play Summerville, and Berkeley will take on Goose Creek.

Bishop England had heavy graduation losses from last year, the second straight season the Bishops went 13-1 and won the Class AA state title.

Summerville, expected to be in the top 10 in Class AAAA, has just about everyone back from last year’s team, including coach John McKissick, who picked up his 600th career victory last fall.

The finale of the two-day event features Berkeley vs. Goose Creek in a two-quarter battle.

Berkeley should be much improved, while Goose Creek will be ranked in the top 10 in Class AAAA and should contend for its second state title in three years.

Top returnees for Goose Creek include running back Kaleb Kinlaw, tight end Kalan Ritchie and quarterback Dantez Bennamon.
