Serena Williams tops Sharapova at Family Circle Cup

Serena Williams celebrates her win over Maria Sharapova during their match at the Family Circle Cup Friday.

No. 5 seed Serena Williams continued her 2008 comeback today with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinals of the Family Circle Cup on Daniel Island.

Williams, who won a hardcourt tournament two weeks ago at Miami, was a point away from losing the first set 6-4 but roared ahead with her vintage power game.

Williams in the Saturday semifinals will face the winner of today's Agnes Szavay-Alize Cornet match. Williams is now 5-2 against Sharapova, who played in the Family Circle Cup for the first time since 2003.
